“I've been supporting mums for 11 years. And in all that time, nobody had ever explained to them why their tummy wasn't going back to how it was.”

Every week, the same woman sits down in my practice.

She gave birth a few months ago. Sometimes a few years ago. Sometimes more than ten years ago. She did the rehab. She went back to exercise. She eats better than she did before the pregnancy.

And she always asks me the same question:

“Why won't my tummy go back to how it was?”

What strikes me is that they feel guilty. As if they weren't doing enough. As if it were their fault.

It isn't their fault. And after 11 years, I want to explain once and for all what nobody explains enough.

Woman looking at her tummy in the mirror

They all say the same thing

“I lost all the pregnancy weight. The scales say 58 kg. But my tummy says otherwise. Soft. Hanging. Sticking out even on an empty stomach, even under clothes.” — Hayley, 32 · Gave birth 8 months ago
“In the morning it's bearable. By the evening I look four months pregnant. My husband says I'm exaggerating. But it's my body — I know it.” — Amelia, 36 · 2 children
“I stopped looking at myself in shop mirrors. I cancelled the pool with the children this summer. I'm 34 and I hide.” — Kirsty, 34 · C-section 14 months ago

Mums who do everything right. Who fight. Who eat better, move more, don't give up.

And who still feel guilty because they see no result.

Why nothing you've tried has worked

What I'm about to explain, most women find out too late. Sometimes months. Sometimes years after giving birth.

Woman doing abdominal exercises
Abdominal exercises strengthen the muscles — but they don't close the wall.

For nine months, your abdominal organs were displaced. The uterus grew until it filled the whole abdominal cavity. It pushed the intestine upwards and the colon out to the sides. Everything moved apart.

The abdominal wall stretched. The tummy muscles widened and lengthened.

After the birth, the uterus contracts quickly. But the organs don't automatically return to their place. The abdominal wall doesn't close on its own.

That tummy you can't get rid of — it's often not excess fat. It's a structure that has stayed open.

This is why every solution fails

  • Exercise — Abdominal work strengthens the muscles. But it doesn't compress the wall inwards. Crunches can even make a diastasis worse. Most women don't know this.
  • Dieting — You can't burn off a displaced structure with a calorie deficit. Your tummy isn't made of excess fat — it's a muscular gap that hasn't closed.
  • Pelvic floor rehabilitation — Essential. But it works on the pelvic floor. Not on closing the abdominal wall. It's like repairing the floor of a house without touching the walls.
  • Ordinary shapewear — They compress the front. The tummy pushes out at the sides and the back. As soon as you take it off, everything drops back. Some make the problem worse by displacing the pressure.
  • Surgery — A tummy tuck costs between €6,000 and €12,000. A scar from hip to hip. 8–10 days in hospital. 3 months of recovery without being able to pick up your own child. And if you put back on even 2–3 kilos, the skin can slacken again. For many mums, it's neither realistic nor affordable.
“I went to see a surgeon. €9,200. I drove home in silence. That evening I cried in the bathroom. Not because I wanted the operation. Because I believed it was my only option.” — Vicky, 38

More than 500 mums have already got their shape back

The sentence that changed everything in my work

Three years ago, a physiotherapist colleague said something to me that I've never forgotten:

“Shapewear compresses the front.
The body goes all the way round.”

That's the whole difference.

Think about that for a second.

Your tummy isn't a flat wall. It's a cylinder. It has a front, sides and a back. The displaced organs aren't only at the front — they're everywhere in the abdominal cavity.

Compressing only the front is like trying to close a tube by pressing on one side only. It will never work.

What you need is circular pressure. 360 degrees. Front, sides, back. Continuous and even.

What Malaysian mothers have known for 500 years

The Malaysian Bengkung technique
The Bengkung: a length of cloth wrapped in a spiral around the tummy after birth.

In many cultures, women have known this for centuries.

In Malaysia, in Morocco, in Indonesia, in Mexico — women bound their tummies after giving birth. Not for cosmetic reasons. For mechanical reasons.

In Malaysia this technique is called Bengkung. A long length of cloth wrapped several times around the tummy, worn in the weeks that follow the birth.

360 degrees of continuous circular compression. Front, sides, back.

Studies on postpartum abdominal compression show a significant reduction in waist measurement and improved repositioning of the organs compared with women who wear no support at all.

The problem — and I say this honestly to my patients — is that the traditional Bengkung is incompatible with modern life:

  • A cloth several metres long
  • Twenty minutes to put on
  • Impossible to put on by yourself
  • Slips after an hour

With a newborn, going back to work and short nights — nobody keeps it up.

What I've been recommending to my patients for several months

lunea shorts, 360° compression

That's why for several months now I've been recommending lunea to my patients.

A brand that has taken the principle of the Bengkung and made it wearable.

Their cross-compression system reproduces the circular pressure of the traditional wrap in an undergarment you put on by yourself in ten seconds, wear under any outfit, and that works all day.

  • 360° compression — front, hips and back
  • Goes on in 10 seconds like ordinary underwear
  • Invisible under any outfit
  • Compatible with breastfeeding and post-C-section
  • Available from S to 3XL

It isn't a band that flattens from the outside while you wear it. It's a compression that helps the abdominal wall do the work it couldn't do on its own.

What my patients observe — week by week

Days 1–3
An immediate feeling of support. The tummy is held, not crushed. Most women wear them all day without thinking about it.
Week 1
The tummy starts to feel different to the touch. Less soft, more held. Some women get back into jeans they hadn't touched for months.
Weeks 2–3
This is often when the people around you notice. “What have you done? You look different.” The tummy lifts, recentres and visibly smooths.
Weeks 4–8
Lasting results on the waist. Not weight loss — a tummy that has found its place again. Clothes you can wear again. Photos you accept again.

Results vary from woman to woman. These aren't medical promises — they're the feedback I hear most often from my patients.

What mums say

★★★★★
“I gave birth 6 months ago and my tummy wasn't shifting despite the physio. After 3 weeks with lunea, my husband said 'you look different'. I wear them every day and nobody knows.”
Hayley B., 32
★★★★★
“C-section 8 months ago. As soon as I could put them on, I felt the compression all the way round. Nothing like the shapewear I'd tried before. No pressure on the scar.”
Amanda D., 35
★★★★★
“My last birth was 4 years ago. I thought it was too late. In 3 weeks my waist was visible again. I fit into jeans I'd given up on.”
Yvonne T., 41
★★★★★
“I had a surgeon's quote on my bedside table. €8,500. I ordered lunea telling myself 'if it doesn't work, I'll go back.' That was 2 months ago. The quote is in the bin.”
